크고 똘망똘망한 눈과 높은 코, 단단한 골격에서 그는 혼혈인이라는 오해를 자주 받는다. 오죽했으면 부모를 따라 건너간 미국의 학교에서도 백인들로부터 혼혈인이라는 얘기를 듣고 다녔을까. 그가 철저하게 ‘한국인’임을 증명한 것은 한여름 선탠으로 변한 피부 색깔. 피부가 탈수록 구릿빛으로 변하는 모습을 보고서야 백인 친구들은 그가 동양인이라는 사실을 알았다고 한다.
매력적인 외모를 지닌 배우 유건(24)은 외형과 달리 참 한국적이다. 몇 마디를 나눠도 금세 마음을 나누고 싶을 만큼 정겨운 어투와 농담하며, 살갑게 대하는 행동들에서 된장국 보다 진한 토종의 냄새를 맡을 수 있었다.
그래서인지 그가 영화 ‘권순분여사 납치사건’의 20대 백수 서종만 역을 맡은 것이 너무도 자연스럽게 느껴진다. 양복 대신 청바지를 입고, 목표 보다 현실에 안주하는 삶을 살아가는 고집 센 백수지만, 내면에 흐르는 끼는 세련됨 보다는 망가짐을 향한다.
“사실 저에게는 새로운 시도죠. 코믹 연기도 처음이에요. 그런데 해보니까 저랑 닮은 점이 많더라고요. 상대방에게 피해를 줄 수 있다는 사실을 알면서도 자기 주관이 강해 계속 밀어부치는 모습들이 말이에요.”
그의 역할은 권순분 여사(나문희)를 납치하는 3인조 가운데 운전을 담당하는 막내다. 형들이 시키는 일을 자기 멋대로 해석해 일을 그르치고 불만도 많은 삐딱한 역할. 게다가 폭탄머리에 호피무늬 신발과 분홍색 자수를 뜬 자켓 등 의상도 눈에 띈다. 그는 “평상시에 입어보지 못한 의상, 해보지 못한 연기들이 이번 영화에 죄다 들어있다”며 “나의 어색함을 깨뜨린 작품”이라고 했다.
유건은 2006년 KBS 드라마 ‘안녕하세요 하느님’을 통해서 연기 데뷔를 시작했지만, 실은 99년 그룹 ‘OPPA’의 래퍼로 연예계에 첫 발을 내디뎠다. 연예 데뷔 과정에선 굴곡도 많았다. 가수 생활 접고 연기를 하겠다고 하자 부모님의 반대로 미국에서 혼자 한국으로 들어와 옷가게, 식당에서 온갖 허드렛일을 하며 연기의 꿈을 키웠다. 꼬깃꼬깃 모은 돈으로 서울 예전에 입학한 뒤 모 연예기획사에 들어갔지만 사기를 당하기도 했다.
그는 “당시 잘 곳이 없어서 친구 집을 전전했는데, 서울에서 안 살아본 동네가 없을 정도였다”며 “지금 생각해보면 자수성가한 연기자가 된 것 같다”고 눈시울을 붉혔다.
고통의 세월 때문인지, 외로움을 많이 탄 지난 시간때문인지 그는 사람 보다 카메라가 더 편하다고 했다. 그는 “연기를 하는 그 순간이 가장 즐겁고 행복하다”고 했다.
“부모의 뜻을 거역하고 연기를 시작했지만, 지금은 제가 연기를 즐겁게 하며 사는 것이 부모에게 효도하는 일이라고 생각해요. 그렇게 촬영을 많이 해도 마음만은 항상 즐겁습니다.”
